Virtual ADHD Evaluation in North Carolina - How to Book Online and What to Expect

If you have been wondering whether you have ADHD - or if you already know you do and have been waiting to find the right provider to confirm it and discuss treatment - this post is for you. I am going to walk through exactly what an ADHD evaluation involves at Renew Wellness, how the booking process works, and what you can expect from your first appointment.

One of the most common things I hear from people seeking ADHD evaluation is that they feel uncertain whether they qualify, whether the process will be taken seriously, or whether they are 'bad enough' to warrant an assessment. I want to address all of that clearly.

Who Should Consider an ADHD Evaluation?

Adult ADHD is one of the most underdiagnosed conditions in psychiatric practice - particularly in women, people diagnosed in childhood who never received adequate follow-up, and people who developed sophisticated compensatory strategies that masked their symptoms until the demands of adult life outpaced them.

Consider booking an ADHD evaluation if you experience persistent difficulties with:

  • Starting tasks - especially those that feel tedious, complex, or unclear in their outcome

  • Sustaining attention on things that do not hold your interest, even when the stakes are high

  • Organising tasks, managing time, or following through on multi-step projects

  • Keeping track of items, appointments, and responsibilities across daily life

  • Emotional regulation - feeling more intensely reactive than you believe you should

  • Restlessness, difficulty sitting still, or a persistent sense of internal buzzing or noise

  • Sleep onset difficulty because your brain will not quiet when you try to wind down

You do not need to have been hyperactive as a child. You do not need to have failed school. You do not need to match every item on a symptom list. ADHD looks different in different people, and a thorough evaluation is designed to understand your specific presentation.

What a Virtual ADHD Evaluation Involves at Renew Wellness

An ADHD evaluation at Renew Wellness is a comprehensive clinical assessment conducted via secure telehealth. It is not a brief questionnaire followed by a prescription. It is a structured clinical interview that covers:

Full symptom history

I will ask in detail about the specific symptoms you experience, how long they have been present, and how they affect your daily life across multiple domains - work, relationships, finances, self-care, and personal goals. ADHD is diagnosed based on pattern and functional impact, not on the severity of a single symptom.

Childhood history

A DSM-5 diagnosis of ADHD requires that symptoms were present before the age of 12, even if they were not identified at the time. We will discuss what school, home, and social life were like growing up - not to confirm a childhood diagnosis, but to establish the developmental pattern.

Ruling out other conditions

Several conditions can produce ADHD-like symptoms - anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, thyroid dysfunction, and sleep disorders among them. Part of a thorough evaluation is distinguishing between ADHD and these alternatives, and identifying cases where ADHD and another condition coexist.

Functional impact assessment

ADHD is only diagnosed when symptoms cause significant impairment in at least two areas of life. We will discuss specifically how your symptoms affect your functioning - not just whether they are present.

A good ADHD evaluation is a conversation, not a test you can pass or fail. My job is to understand your experience fully - not to catch you out or question whether your struggles are real.

How to Book Your ADHD Evaluation Online

Booking is done entirely online through our patient portal - no phone call or referral required. Here is the process:

  1. Visit renewwellnessbh.com and click the Book Your Intake Appointment button

  2. Create your patient account in the therapy portal

  3. Select a date and time that works for your schedule - weekday and evening appointments are available

  4. Complete the intake paperwork online before your appointment

  5. At your appointment time, click the secure video link sent to your email - no download required

Before your appointment, it helps to have a rough timeline of when your symptoms started and a list of any medications you currently take. There is nothing else you need to prepare.

What Happens After the Evaluation?

At the end of your intake appointment, you will have a clear clinical picture and a personalised treatment recommendation. If ADHD is confirmed, we will discuss all treatment options including stimulant medications, non-stimulant alternatives, and supportive strategies.

If a different condition is identified - or if both ADHD and another condition are present - I will explain exactly what we found and recommend the appropriate treatment approach. Either way, you leave with answers and a plan.

Prescriptions are sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy in North Carolina. Follow-up appointments are typically scheduled within 2 to 4 weeks of starting any new medication to assess your response and make adjustments as needed.

Insurance and Cost

At Renew Wellness, we accept most major insurance plans including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Healthy Blue, Amerihealth Caritas, Carolina Complete and United Healthcare Community Plan. Please verify your specific coverage with your insurer before your first appointment.

Self-pay rates are available: the initial 60-minute intake appointment is $200 and follow-up sessions are $140. HSA and FSA cards are accepted.

Who We Serve

Renew Wellness serves adults (18 and older) across all of North Carolina via telehealth. We frequently see patients who were not diagnosed as children, patients whose ADHD was previously dismissed or inadequately treated, women with ADHD who were told they did not fit the profile, and patients in rural or underserved communities who do not have a local psychiatric provider nearby.

❓  Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I get an official ADHD diagnosis via telehealth in North Carolina?

A: Yes. A telehealth psychiatric evaluation by a licensed PMHNP or psychiatrist in North Carolina produces the same clinical diagnosis as an in-person evaluation. The assessment follows the same DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and clinical interview process. A diagnosis from a telehealth evaluation is fully valid for treatment purposes, insurance documentation, and workplace accommodations.

Q: Do I need neuropsychological testing for an ADHD diagnosis?

A: Neuropsychological testing - the full battery of cognitive tests administered by a psychologist - is part of required for a clinical ADHD diagnosis. The DSM-5 diagnostic criteria are based on clinical interview, symptom history, and functional impact assessment. Neuropsychological testing can be useful in complex cases, for learning disability assessments, or when formal documentation is required for specific purposes such as standardized testing accommodations. I will discuss whether testing is indicated in your specific case.

Q: What if I think I have both ADHD and anxiety?

A: ADHD and anxiety are among the most commonly co-occurring conditions in adults - research suggests that between 30 and 50 percent of adults with ADHD also have a clinically significant anxiety disorder. A comprehensive evaluation will assess for both conditions and clarify which is driving which symptoms. In many cases, treating ADHD significantly reduces anxiety without separate anxiety treatment. In others, both conditions need to be addressed in a coordinated way.

Q: Can you prescribe stimulant medication for ADHD via telehealth in NC?

A: Yes. As a board-certified PMHNP with full prescriptive authority in North Carolina, I can prescribe stimulant medications including methylphenidate-based and amphetamine-based medications via telehealth when clinically appropriate. A thorough evaluation is required before any stimulant is prescribed. Non-stimulant alternatives such as atomoxetine, viloxazine, guanfacine, and clonidine are also available and may be preferable in certain clinical situations.

Q: How long does the ADHD evaluation appointment take?

A: The initial intake appointment is 60 minutes. This is sufficient time for a comprehensive clinical assessment in the majority of adult ADHD cases. In more complex presentations - for example, where multiple conditions may be present or where the history is particularly extensive - I may recommend a follow-up session before finalizing the diagnostic formulation and treatment plan.
